WASHINGTON, D.C. (JUNE 7, 2011) – The Generic Pharmaceutical Association (GPhA) today released the following statement on the FDA’s planned reorganization of the Office of Compliance to increase the security of the global pharmaceutical supply chain.

GPhA is pleased to hear reports that the FDA is reorganizing its Office of Compliance to address the increasing globalization seen throughout the pharmaceutical industry.

The generic industry has long supported measures to increase the FDA’s global reach — including strengthening the foreign drug inspection system and increasing funding for the Office of Generic Drugs — and appreciates the agency’s dedication to assuring safety across the board for all pharmaceutical products.

GPhA applauds the FDA’s initiative in taking these steps and looks forward to working with agency’s new offices to deliver the safe, affordable generic medications that patients have come to rely on.

GPhA represents the manufacturers and distributors of finished generic pharmaceuticals, manufacturers and distributors of bulk pharmaceutical chemicals, and suppliers of other goods and services to the generic industry. Generic pharmaceuticals fill 75 percent of the prescriptions dispensed in the U.S. but consume just 22 percent of the total drug spending. Additional information is available at gphaonline.org.
