Established Industry Leader Will Guide Regulatory Department
WASHINGTON, D.C. (JAN. 10, 2012) — The Generic Pharmaceutical Association (GPhA) today announced that David Gaugh has joined the Association as Vice President for Regulatory Sciences. Gaugh brings extraordinary expertise to GPhA, including more than 25 years of leadership experience within the health care and generic pharmaceutical industries.
“I am thrilled to have David join GPhA as we enter a critical period both for our industry and the future of our country’s health care system,” said Ralph G. Neas, President and CEO of GPhA. “With the implementation of a biosimilars approval pathway, multiple user fee programs and other major challenges ahead of us in 2012, David’s technical, clinical, policy and business background will be a vital asset. His history of working closely with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), manufacturers and other stakeholders will be critical as we continue our efforts to ensure that affordable generic pharmaceuticals are more readily available to American consumers.”
“As an established leader with decades of experience throughout the health care industry, including membership on GPhA’s Board of Directors, David will bring a unique and important perspective to GPhA, and he could not be starting at a more ideal time,” Neas said.
Gaugh’s background and experiences are wide-ranging. Most recently, he served as Vice President and General Manager for Bedford Laboratories, the generic injectable division of Ben Venue Laboratories. During his nine-year tenure at Ben Venue, a wholly owned subsidiary of Boehringer Ingelheim, he was responsible for strategic planning, financial management, business development, marketing and sales for the company’s $500 million branded generic injectable business.
Prior to joining Ben Venue, Gaugh served as Senior Director, Pharmacy Contracting and Marketing for VHA/Novation, one of the largest Group Purchasing Organizations in the U.S. In this role he managed the strategy, business development and relationship building for the company’s 125 pharmacy supplier and distribution agreements, within a business unit that had total values of over $8 billion in annual pharmaceutical sales. Prior to Novation, Gaugh was the System Director of Pharmacy for St. Luke’s Health-System, a regional referral teaching hospital in Kansas City, Mo.
Gaugh is a registered pharmacist and a graduate of the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy. His extensive clinical pharmacy experience will help maximize the therapeutic and economic value that affordable generic pharmaceuticals offer the nation’s health care system. In addition to serving on the GPhA Board of Directors, Gaugh is a member of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists Education and Research Foundation Board of Directors, and he has been an adjunct professor for pharmacy internship and residency programs.
GPhA represents the manufacturers and distributors of finished generic pharmaceuticals, manufacturers and distributors of bulk pharmaceutical chemicals, and suppliers of other goods and services to the generic industry. Generic pharmaceuticals fill 78 percent of the prescriptions dispensed in the U.S. but consume just 25 percent of the total drug spending. Additional information is available at gphaonline.org.
